Sending Out an S.O.S

I sought the Lord, and he answered me…..Psalm 34:4

When the hut of a settler in a mountainous region of Alaska caught fire, the settler was left without adequate shelter and with few provisions in the coldest state in the US—in the middle of a frigid winter. Three weeks later, the man was finally rescued when an aircraft flew over and spied the large SOS he had stamped out in the snow and darkened with soot.

The psalmist David was certainly in dire straits. He was being pursued by jealous King Saul who sought to kill him. And so he fled to the city of Gath, where he pretended to be insane in order to preserve his life (see 1 Samuel 21). Out of those events emerged Psalm 34, where David cried out in prayer to God and found peace (vv. 4, 6). God heard his pleas and delivered him.

Are you in a desperate situation and crying out for help? Be assured that God still hears and responds to our desperate prayers today. As with David, He’s attentive to our distress calls and takes away our fears (v. 4)—and sometimes even saves us “out of [our] troubles” (v. 6).

Scripture invites us to “cast [our] cares on the Lord and he will sustain [us]” (Psalm 55:22). When we turn our difficult circumstances over to God, we can trust that He’ll provide the help we need. We’re secure in His capable hands. By Alyson Kieda

ACTION

Passion and Vision alone are simply a dream. It’s only when we add Action, that our dreams can move towards becoming a reality.

Jesus was a man of Passion, Vision and Action, and this was clear in Matthew 9 when He sent out his 12 followers to the towns of Israel. It is also true here at the end of His ministry on earth, when He then commissions His followers to go to all the world! Jesus had a plan, He outlined the purpose of the mission, He outlined some of the specifics and then He assured them that they will have all they need to accomplish it.

As you think about your vision, can you think of the next steps of action?

Just like Jesus outlines a plan of action, we need to do the same. Sometimes we get overwhelmed by the size of our ideas, so we need to break a vision down into simple action steps. One year I set a goal to run 1000 km – although not all in one go! I broke it down and ran about 20 km per week so that by the end of the year I had run the 1000 km. The achievement gave me an incredible feeling of satisfaction. The following year I decided to set another goal, this time to complete 10,000 push-ups. Can I do 10,000 push-ups in one go? No way! I broke it down to 30 or 40 a day so that over the course of that year I would complete the entire 10,000 push-ups. Break your goals down into doable steps and then gather together the people and resources you need to get started.

Personally, I find these Six Questions to be helpful in making a plan:

Why am I interested in doing this?

What is my vision?

How will I go about this?

Where do I want to start?

Who will join me?

When am I going to get started?

Divorced in 5 years?

Did you know that this year in the United States there will be 2.3 million weddings? There will also be about half that many divorces. There will continue to be more divorces in the first year of marriage than ever before. I love weddings, and I hate divorces. I spend a lot of time thinking about ways that couples can take divorce off the table and have the hope of an Awesome Marriage.
Most of you who receive “One Thing” are married, and most of you are here because you want your marriage to be better. Today I want to take a little different approach. I want to challenge each couple to pray for the couples who will get married today. That’s about 6,200 weddings today. What if God uses our prayers in a special way in those marriages? What if five years from today none of those couples is divorced? What if each and every couple has an Awesome Marriage all because God honors the prayers of His people coming together on this one day? What if?
Today’s One Thing:
Pray as a couple for the 6,200 couples that will be married today!
